On November 25, 1929 twelve young women arranged
a meeting with the President of the Ho-Ho-Kus Women’s Club for the purpose of starting a Junior department. They decided
to call themselves the Junior Women’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus and agreed to charge $1.55 for dues, arranged to meet in members’
homes and planned their first social- a card party. Over the years, the Juniors increased their membership to
a high of 47 members and raised their dues to $2.35 while the club continued to grow. By 1945 the club decided they would
like to function independently of the senior club and with a membership of 77, they became an evening club and adopted the
name “The Contemporary Club.”
As we celebrated our
80th year in existence we recognize that many things have changed. One thing, however, has remained the same- the fact that
the Contemporary Club continues to be an incredible organization of dedicated women working together to do great things for
our community. With renewed enthusiasm and dedication to our club, as well as the active participation of every member- I
look forward to continuing that tradition during my second year of my presidency. Fun events, community outreach & successful fundraising!
I encourage
you to get involved- not only with our clubs’ activities - but more importantly with our members. We’ve got a
terrific group of women - get to know one another! With each new member we welcome into our club, introduce yourself and do
what you can to make our new members feel welcome! Let’s continue to do great things for our community while having
great fun with new friends and old!
